The Rhythm Of Life!™ programs offer benefits for both the individual and the group.
Ensemble playing of dynamic world-beat rhythms is dependent on group synergy and the interlocking dialogue between singers, dancers, players, and their instruments. Responsibility, cooperation, and respect are the group skills that create and sustain the groove. As the energy of the music builds so does the synergy within the group. Each drum (or instrument) pattern needs the other in order to fulfill and maintain the pulse, downplaying unhealthy competition and emphasizing teamwork. Each part complements and supports the other, creating an atmosphere of fine tuned cooperation that carries over into daily life.
The therapeutic value of drumming is gaining great recognition. Youth of all ages, adults, senior citizens, handicapped, ADHD, and addiction recovery populations, benefit from the powerful yet simple experience of group drumming. Hospitals, schools, and prisons are becoming increasingly aware of the healing, soothing, and educational value of rhythm, song, and dance. All ages experience the neurological and physical benefits that come from participating in rhythm and movement circles.
A neurologist in Meadville, Pennsylvania, has found a way to help beat illness: drum circles. Dr. Barry Bittman says new research suggests that beating a drum for one hour enhances the immune system and reduces stress. The study shows that drumming in a circle with other folks can cause positive changes at the cellular level that may fight off cancer and viral illnesses. However, just banging by yourself doesn't seem to help. Bittman says the drumming must be done with others and everyone has to keep on the same rhythm.
Through the individual contributions to the circle, each participant feels the power of their own rhythm, voice, and movement; this builds self-esteem, and encourages creativity and further self-discovery.
Music, song and dance are common threads throughout communities of the world. The multicultural awareness that results from exposure to various ethnic expressions enlarges our worldview; it invites understanding, tolerance, and acceptance. Multicultural education, within the context of music and movement, expands our self-expression with new colors, ideas, and aliveness. Furthermore, knowledge of cultures different from our own, encourages us to release alienation and creates respectful relationships between individuals of all ages and backgrounds. This is an important element in building healthy and functional families and communities (classrooms, schools, corporations, and groups of all kinds).
In exploring world-beat rhythms, we can learn a sensitivity that is deeply rooted in community, cooperation, and a profound reverence for life. The Rhythm Of Life!™ enriches the lives of all participants, with a hands-on experience that inspires vitality and fulfillment.
